With over 1.84 million annual test-takers, the ACT is now chosen by more aspiring college students than the SAT. The overall average composite score on the ACT is about 20, which corresponds to an SAT score of approximately 1450 (out of 2400). Students accepted to the most selective universities generally score at the extreme upper end of the scale. At Princeton University, for example, middle 50% composite ACT scores for first-year students were between 32 and 35 (the 98th and 99th percentiles). Vassar College reports mean ACT scores of 31.5 and a median of 32, with middle 50% scores of 30-33. The most recent entering class of arts and sciences students at Duke University had 25th percentile ACT scores of 31 and 75th percentile ACT scores of 34, and the same range for Duke undergraduate engineering students was 32-35. At Pennsylvania State University, the latest middle-50% ACT score range was 26-30. Meeting the ACT standards of prestigious institutions requires professional instruction and focused student effort, but high scores can be attained by most students.

Meet a Paris ACT Tutor: Karen G.

Karen G. has been an ACT tutor in New York, London, and Paris since 2009. Previously an SAT tutor, she switched over to ACT prep because she enjoys the latter test's greater range of subject matter. Karen is also an experienced secondary educator, and served on the faculty of a public high school outside of New York City for seven years. She is a two-time finalist for her school district's Teacher of the Year award.

Karen was educated at the University of Connecticut, where she completed bachelor's and master's degrees in education. She has lived in Paris since 2016, where she works as an educational consultant when she's not teaching test prep. Her ACT tutoring consistently receives high marks from her students, many of whom have been accepted to universities ranked in the top 50 in the United States.
