The TOEFL assesses English language ability in four areas: reading, writing, speaking, and listening. Universities in English-speaking countries can have vastly different expectations for TOEFL subscores and total scores. Boston University, for example, expects only an 18 on the listening subscore from its undergraduate applicants, compared to 22 reading, 23 speaking, and 22 writing. Carnegie Mellon University, on the other hand, seemingly considers speaking to be the least important subscore, with a minimum of 18 (as opposed to 22 on all of the other TOEFL sections). Degree level can also be a factor. At Cornell University, the minimum undergraduate total score is 100, but graduate applicants are only required to score a 77. New York University is an example of the inverse, with minimum scores of 92 for undergraduates and 100 for graduates. Regardless of your particular requirements, Manhattan Review's TOEFL private tutoring and TOEFL prep courses will show you how to learn the content of each TOEFL section, how to become a strategic test-taker, and how to supercharge the effectiveness of your study time.

The TOEFL can be an obstacle to beginning an undergraduate or graduate degree program, with unsuccessful students usually forced to take expensive and time-consuming remedial English courses. Manhattan Review has helped thousands of students pass the TOEFL and matriculate at selective universities such as Oxford, Harvard, Cambridge, Princeton, the London School of Economics, Yale, MIT, the University of Edinburgh, Stanford, CalTech, Johns Hopkins, the University of Pennsylvania, Carnegie Mellon, Dartmouth, UCLA, and many more. Professional success after graduation is common among our TOEFL clients, who have been hired by Fortune 500 companies and Paris firms such as Exxon Mobil, Proctor & Gamble, Marathon Petroleum, Lockheed Martin, Nanobiotix, MTL Index, Nexans, and Murex. In addition to the benefits of passing the TOEFL, learning the English language is a valuable skill in itself. Manhattan Review's TOEFL prep courses and private tutoring in Paris will help make your transition to university life in the English-speaking world much easier.

Meet a Paris TOEFL Tutor: Patrice L.

Patrice L., a native of Montreal, Canada, has been a TOEFL prep tutor and teacher of English as a second language since 2007. He holds a bachelor's degree in education from McGill University, a master's degree in history from the University of Vermont, and a TESOL certificate from Hunter College of the City University of New York.

Patrice describes his friendly personality as one of his most important teaching assets. "It's very difficult to learn from someone who isn't a nice person," he says. "If students are insulted or offended by their teachers, then they can't focus on learning." Patrice's student evaluations, and the accomplishments of his students, show that his teaching approach is highly valued.
