According to data released by the Educational Testing Service (ETS), the organization responsible for administering the GRE, the median scores for the verbal and quantitative sections are approximately 150-151 and 152-153, respectively. Meanwhile, the median score for the writing section falls between 3.5 and 4.0. Interestingly, high scores in the quantitative area are more prevalent than high scores in the verbal section. For instance, consider a verbal score of 160; it would place an individual in the 86th percentile. However, a quantitative score of 160 would only set the tester in the 76th percentile. In the verbal section, only approximately 2% of all exam-takers achieve a score of 167 or higher, whereas in the quantitative section, this same level of achievement is seen in 8% of the test-takers. The criteria for GRE scores in graduate programs frequently vary based on the specific academic discipline being pursued. Successful applicants to the Ph.D. program in the Department of Statistics at the University of Virginia usually achieve a minimum score of 166 on the quantitative section. However, the department only requires verbal scores of 153 or above, as statistics primarily focuses on quantitative aspects. Manhattan Review emphasizes the importance of students familiarizing themselves with the GRE score requirements set by their desired universities, schools, and departments. This practice enables students to establish a clear objective for their GRE instruction, ensuring they are well-prepared for their academic pursuits.

GRE Prep Course Marseilles - Photo of Student Tamara

I would like to let you know that I took the GRE on Monday, December 6th and earned a score of 1200 (600 verbal, 600 quantitative). I think that I did very well on the essay portion of the test as well but won't receive those scores in the mail for a couple weeks or so. I would like to thank my instructor (George S.) and Manhattan Review for helping me to increase my score so much (I got a 1050 the first time I took the GRE in 2002) Thank you very much.
